General discharge information after surgical procedures

Pain:

Pain is normal after an operation, but should subside when using pain medication.  Pain should diminish over time and not worsen.  Worsening pain needs attention.

Wound care:

Follow the dr’s instructions. Leave the wound closed until follow up appointment unless instructed otherwise.  Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching the wound.  Keep the wound dry and clean.

Diet:

Follow the dietician’s instructions regarding the appropriate diet for your condition.  It is important to eat at least 3 balanced meals a day consisting of protein (meat, fish, cheese etc) fruit and vegetables, starches (potatoes, rice, bread and pasta) and enough fiber ( raw fruit, vegetables and whole wheat products) to prevent constipation.  Drink 6-8 glasses of water

Exercise:

Follow the dr’s or physiotherapist’s instructions. Mild exercise like walking is good.  Don’t over exert yourself or do exercise that causes strain at the wound site.  Do not engage on activity that can be detrimental to your outcome.  Consult your doctor when in doubt.

Prevent constipation:

Pain medication and lack of exercise can cause constipation.  It can be prevented with the correct diet, enough fluids and mild exercise.  Medications may be taken if required.

Medication:

Take medication as instructed by the doctor or pharmacist.  Alwys complete the course of antibiotics.  Make sure you get the correct amount of tablets prescribed.

Driving:

Do not drive yourself if it causes any discomfort / pain for the first week to 10 days
