Dr Gerrit van Schalkwyk is a Specialist Surgeon in Private Practice in Rustenburg, North West.

He qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Stellenbosch in 1991, obtaining his MB ChB degree.  He did his internship in George Provincial Hospital and then spent a year working in the United Kingdom.  Upon his return to South Africa, he worked in George Provincial Hospital’s Surgical Department for two years before specializing in General Surgery at the University of Stellenbosch (Tygerberg Hospital).

Dr van Schalkwyk obtained the degrees M.Med(Surgery) and FCS in 2000 and spent a further year working in Tygerberg Hospital thereafter.  He started in Private Practice in Rustenburg in April 2002, practising as a Specialist Surgeon since then.

As a Specialist Surgeon, Dr van Schalkwyk performs Gastro-intestinal-, Hernia-, Endocrine- and Breast Surgery on a regular basis.  He has a special interest in Laparoscopic Surgery and has attended various Postgraduate Training Courses, workshops and advanced Laparoscopic courses in Hamburg (Germany), Strasbourg (France), Guildford (UK) as well as locally.

Dr van Schalkwyk also renders an endoscopic service in his rooms, where both gastroscopies and colonoscopies are performed under conscious sedation done by an anesthetist.
